Implementation of Cloud Governance: Secure and Efficient Cloud Management

Challenge

A prominent construction company with over 70 years of market experience faced the challenge of transitioning from an on-premise infrastructure to a cloud environment. This shift required the establishment and implementation of Cloud Governance—a set of rules and principles for the secure and transparent management of the new cloud solution. The company encountered several specific issues. The original setup lacked defined policies and security measures, necessitating the creation of a cloud infrastructure from scratch based on the principles of Microsoft’s Well-Architected Framework (WAF) and Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF). Another challenge was the absence of unification—there was no consistent environment structure or naming conventions, which would have simplified and accelerated the identification of objects in the cloud. Additionally, the company collaborated with multiple IT vendors, requiring effective coordination of their activities and clear delineation of responsibilities within a multi-vendor environment.

Solution

The Ness team designed and implemented Azure Cloud Governance based on Microsoft’s general recommendations. The solution included the introduction of cloud management policies and Infrastructure as Code (IaC), enabling consistent and repeatable infrastructure deployment. This approach ensured secure cloud operations and opened opportunities for supporting additional IT vendors, providing the company with flexibility for future development and changes in the vendor landscape.

Results

The implementation of Cloud Governance delivered several critical benefits to the company. Rapid implementation enabled the company to begin its cloud migration, which was essential given the time constraints. The new solution provided a comprehensive overview of cloud resources, their usage, and costs, improving control and visibility over the cloud environment. The introduction of security and data protection policies reduced the risks of cyberattacks and sensitive data leaks. These enhancements allowed the company to achieve greater agility, more efficient deployment of cloud services, and supported innovation, enabling faster responses to evolving market needs.

An important outcome was also ensuring compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements, minimizing legal and reputational risks. The new infrastructure, built on a modern cloud landing zone, enabled the company to operate its data platform efficiently and securely. Thanks to the implementation of Cloud Governance, the construction company not only strengthened its market position but also established a solid foundation for the further development and management of its cloud environment.
