Implementation of SAP S/4HANA for a Telecommunications Company

Challenges

The client was a company offering a comprehensive portfolio of telecommunications and ICT services through its own infrastructure for wholesale and corporate customers. The company faced several challenges that necessitated the modernization of its existing ERP system:

Outdated system: The company was using an older version of SAP ECC, which no longer met current support and development needs, with support for this system set to end.

Custom development and non-standard functionalities: A significant portion of processes relied on non-standard custom developments that were poorly documented and complicated system management.

More efficient planning: The company needed to modernize and simplify planning, particularly financial and project processes, to gain a more detailed view of costs and revenues.

Security requirements: As a critical state infrastructure entity, all solutions had to fully comply with strict security demands and integrate with external security tools.

Process standardization: A key project goal was to reduce custom modifications and align more closely with SAP Best Practices, which would improve efficiency and transparency.

Solution

To address these challenges, a greenfield implementation of the SAP S/4HANA ERP system was carried out, including:

Process redesign: Existing company processes were thoroughly mapped, partially standardized, and documented. Custom modifications were minimized and replaced with standard SAP functionalities.

Modern technologies: Additional tools were implemented, such as SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) for financial planning and reporting, SAP BTP Integration Suite for future integrations, and SAP Build Work Zone for a personalized user experience and mobile access to applications.

FIORI applications: The deployment of FIORI apps enhanced the user experience and enabled more convenient work through a modern web interface.

Security: Robust security mechanisms were introduced, including a revamped authorization concept focused on Segregation of Duties (SoD).

Data migration: Data was migrated from the legacy SAP ECC system to SAP S/4HANA using the Migration Cockpit. Migration was part of the comprehensive implementation, not the primary focus.

NESS methodology: The entire project was executed according to the NESS methodology, which is based on SAP Activate and reflects the team’s extensive experience.

Results

Modern ERP system: The new SAP S/4HANA system simplified processes, provided faster responses, and achieved a high degree of standardization.

More effective decision-making: Modules like SAP PS (Project System) and SAP Analytics Cloud enabled users to better plan, analyze data, and make decisions based on accurate, up-to-date information.

High security: The new authorization concept and integration with security tools ensured full compliance with critical infrastructure requirements.

Utilization of cloud tools: SAP Build Work Zone provided employees with easy access to internal applications outside the corporate network, such as for submitting leave requests.

User-friendliness: The web interface and FIORI applications simplified work for approximately 400 system users.

The project was completed successfully, meeting all defined objectives—from modernizing IT infrastructure to ensuring greater efficiency, standardization, and security.
